What is unique about Fascinating Science?
Fascinating Science is a Flash slide show presentation with embedded audio files that teaches chemistry to middle-school and high-school students. In 42 lessons, students learn how atoms bond, why they bond, and how bonding explains everyday phenomena in biology, earth science, meteorology, astronomy, and nuclear physics.
Fascinating Science begins each lesson with the simplest of questions, a question often so basic that students never thought to ask it. The purpose of this approach is to get them into the habit of looking at their world and asking how and why. At the end of each lesson is a short quiz to make sure the students understand the material discussed.
What is the Appeal of Fascinating Science?
Fascinating Science’s use of technology is a natural for today’s kids who are as comfortable with computers as past generations were with books. Students will love learning science using Fascinating Science’s method of teaching. They can actually see how science works in vivid color rather than just reading about it. What Approach is Used in Fascinating Science?
Fascinating Science employs the same step-by-step, logical approach that Sheldon Margulies, M.D. used in two of his previous books. In Everyday Doctoring, A New Approach to the Logic and Reasoning of Neurology and Medicine, he explained the logic doctors use to figure out the cause of a patient’s symptoms. In Learning Law, Sheldon Margulies, M.D. explained the logic lawyers use when analyzing a legal case. (He has both a medical and a law degree.) The principle underlying Fascinating Science, Everyday Doctoring, and Learning Law is that students remember best when the material makes sense -- when there are logical reasons for how things work.
How Did Fascinating Science Come About?
After reading that our science students were falling behind, Sheldon Margulies, M.D. decided to write a book that would turn students on to the study of human biology and stimulate them to continue in biology. In 2004, Dr. Margulies wrote The Fascinating Body explaining how the body works in plain English, using a question and answer format. Students and teachers have found The Fascinating Body informative and fun to read.
Dr. Margulies followed up The Fascinating Body with Fascinating Science, which offers beginning students a clear understanding of basic chemistry and related sciences. The goal for this e-learning series is to supplement what students are already learning in the classroom.
